Fundatia Calea Victoriei in collaboration with City Compass invite you to the next edition of our cultural education courses for Bucharest’s Expat families.
Discover the background of the people you interact with in your new city and find out more about different aspects of Romanian culture! Designed for both children and adults of all ages, the event will take place in a beautiful 19th century building.
Introduction:
Romania is the country with the biggest Roma population in Europe, also acknowledged as one of the most important sending countries for Roma migration in Western Europe after the fall of communism.
We will draw a brief general introduction into the history of Roma people and their diversity on the territory of present Romania, comprising testimonies of their slavery (robie) since early middle age till late 19th century, then witnesses of their deportation during the second world war. Afterwards we will discuss assimilationist policies such as employment, education and ban of nomadism that Roma were targeted to during communism, which yet failed to integrate this population.
At the end of the event we will draw conclusions together about how comunism breakdown gave Roma people political rights to ethnic self identification and how opening of the Romanian borders impacted upon the Roma populations . Audio, photo and video materials both from Romania and Italian campi nomadi will be brought in support of the talk by the end of which everybody will hopefully get a clearer, closer to the ground image of the Romanian Roma people, beyond the everyday stereotypical representation of this population.
